I wasn't disputing you in regards to your vehicles front shaft not turning with lockouts unlocked. I was just saying that none of the 75-80 model trucks that I had could be unlocked at the hub, therefore the shaft turned. When I removed my front shaft, the vehicle would only move in the lock position. None of my 203's were modified in any way. I suspect that if others are driving w/o front shafts, they too are driving with the shifter in Hi-Loc, or had modified the t-case in some way. I don't know.

My trucks of that era include 78 W200 club 727/203, 79 W200 club 435/203, 76 Ramcharger 727/203, 77 W100 727/203.

I like the concept of the 203, but am not real crazy about the chain drive as opposed to gear drive.

Seems like some of the Jeep transfer cases in the 90's & later cherokee did a better job with "full-time" type operation than the NP203.
