I use teflon pipe dope (like harvey's) on the ends of the bolts and hylomar non-hardening sealer on the gaskets, and they never leak. Lots of guys just use blue RTV on everything and that seems to work too. I know a purist would not use any kind of gasket dope, but I'd rather have it not leak.
