I have never had a problem like you describe. I always get the bearing sitting square, then use a large wrist pin that fits the bearing perfect. A few good wacks and she moves right into position. You may have some burs on the trunion pin, your new bearing might ? be slightly undersize, your trunion pin might be sightly oversize. There are jobs that dead blow (shot filled) hammers work well. For this job, I prefer my 3 pound hand hammer. Like a one hand sledge head.
