There have been several posts in this thread that are helpful and some which are just opinions.
In general it is best to eliminate poisonous snakes if you can in areas your family or pets will come in contact with them.
Dogs are very curious and frequently get bitten.
Aside from that, ask your local veterinarian for his/her adivice as they know the particulars of that area. That is because there are many factors involved, no "pat" answer for poisonous snake bites in general.
The vet must take into account: the size of the dog, cat, etc. that was bitten, where he was bitten, the species of snake, how big was the snake, whether it was a defensive bite or a multiple bites by the snake, time of year (snakes that just come out of hibernation can have more poison stored up), etc.
For example, if a dachshund gets bit in the face by an adult rattlesnake, that is A LOT more dangerous than a German shepherd bit in the leg by a copperhead. So the treatment would likely be different.
The veterinarian in an area KNOWS what the best course is, rather than rely on a thousand different folk tales, etc.
It might only take a call to guide you as to what to do.
