I always feel bad for the rank and file fire and police.
In our township the firefighters union has filed suit to eleminate the last of the volunteer firemen and women from the fire stations.
As a citizen i cannot figure out why (except for more money and power to the union heads ) qualified volunteers are a bad thing. They can stay, but will have to join the union, pay dues etc..
For the record, i am a union carpenter and i have had a pay freeze for the last 3 years, and have seen my share of insurance cost go up. I am not bitter, as i know the economy is in the dumps, and i would rather work at last years pay, than be unemployed.
I think, most people feel this way. What i do not understand is when unions, cut off the noses of their members, just to make a point. The union leaders do not lose pay or risk losing benefits, the workers do.
Oh well, that is my vent
