According to petrol manufacturers chemist, modern petrol need at least 8:1 compression ratio to get the best out of it, so that should be a good hint where to start. Engines run cooler, complete combustion and better economy. Making the engine breathe better to suit the new compression ratio should be next with a different cam grind to make sure the valves open far enough and stay open long enough to get the best out of it. Then you can consider headers and better carburation or fuel injection.
If you decide to go down this road the 237 should ideally be in pristine condition and balanced. The 265 bottom end will give you more torque, where the 237 will give better revs. Over-boring the 237 and using modern pistons helps as well.
