Bruce, I would get some long 3/8 bolts and replace the two lower transmission to engine bolts so you can slide the transmission back enough to get a socket on the crank bolts.(kinda like the old trick for lining things up after a clutch job)
Probably easier to unbolt the crossmember from the frame if the truck has the saddle type transfercase mounts
Also watch that the pilot boss on the torque converter does not bind in the crank.. if you un-stab the torque converter you might mess up the pump seal.
