thats the point! but now in peace time it is the same bottom line if you are way out in th sticks and you have to get thru some situation where tire replacement or repair is not an option the rim wont fall apart. My .02 is there is no advantage to split. only disadvantage. I see the switch to split rims as a cost saving measure. even the higher end modern military trucks are still using bolt together rims. a superior design. I did not get better mileage with split rims on my 49. at least I didn't notice any drop when I switched to combats. all those littel bolts are good for shewing thru stumps on the trail. ;/)
