Plenty of success with this method. I wash the drum and all the brake parts with the garden hose first, then rebuild/replace the cylinder, another wash and follow up with brake cleaner on the linings and blow dry with compressed air. If linings have been soaked in gear oil from a leaking axle seal and sitting for a long time, they are pretty much trashed, but brake fluid soaked can usually be recovered.
