What's not a myth is that it takes twice as much energy to make 1 gallon of ethanol than you get out of it and without government subsidies ethanol just isn't cost competitive.

That dog just won't hunt.

Until there becomes a way to extract sugars from cellulose (cellulosic alchohol) ethanol is the same sort of boondoggle as every other sort of government subsidy program.

If we were serious about energy independence we would be drilling for natural gas 24/7/365 with every drilling rig and able bodied man available and also cutting though government red-tape to ensure that it doesn't take 20 years to get approval for new nuclear plants.

And don't get me started on solar or win or geothermal.
