On most vehicles, the brakes can absorb about 10X the energy that the engine can put out, at least for a short while. So, in that situation, I would leave it in high gear and use the brakes to stop the truck and kill the engine -- same as drivers should have been doing with their "stuck gas pedal" Toyotas. That means braking hard until you come to a complete stop, rather than riding the brakes until they're smoking and then thinking about trying to stop. Of course the brakes might still fail, or the clutch might slip, or the U-joint might break, or the steering wheel might fall off, which is why you go to confession every week and say your Ave Marias and Pater Nosters.
