This engine uses a two piece type rear main bearing oil seal. Replace both upper and lower seal halves as a unit.

1. Remove transmission and flywheel or driveplate.
2. Remove oil pan as outlined under Oil Pan Replacement @ Engine Lubrication/ Oil Pan, Engine/ Service and Repair.
3. Remove rear main bearing cap.
4. Remove upper and lower seal halves, then wipe seal surface area of crankshaft until it is clean.
5. Apply suitable oil to seal lips, then install upper seal in cylinder block. Ensure lip of seal faces toward front of engine.
6. Apply suitable sealing compound to both sides of lower seal end tabs. CAUTION: Use caution not to apply sealant to lip of seal.
7. Coat outer curved surface of lower seal with suitable soap and lip of seal with oil.
8. Install lower seal into bearing cap recess and seat it firmly. Apply sealing compound to both chamfered edges of rear main bearing cap, then install rear main bearing cap and cap attaching bolts and tighten to specifications. CAUTION: Use caution not to apply sealant to cylinder block mating surfaces of rear main bearing cap because bearing to journal clearance could change.
