Okay, I will assume it's on tight and will need a puller which means it will need the radiator removed, which means I'm not going to do it any time soon. Plus, they can't have it down for more than 2 days until the season is over. I don't like the timing jumping all over because that's hard on the rest of the engine. If I could just write a work order for somebody else to do, I'd have them replace the timing chain, harmonic balancer, and distributor drive gear.

The bus is a 1974, but the engine was overhauled by a local machine shop only 5 years ago, I think. Definitely no more than 10 years ago. Until 3 years ago, when we got the new trolley, they ran it constantly from May through September. The round trip to the mine and back is probably only 2 miles, so if they do 10 trips a day, that's only 700 miles/year. If they used it for 7 years before getting the new one, that's about 5000 miles on the overhauled engine. One of the questions, of course, is exactly what was replaced in the overhaul. It shouldn't have burned a valve in 5000 miles either.

Is it a fair test of the harmonic balancer to just take the fan belt off and see if I can turn it by hand without the engine turning?
