I wasn’t born with all the polish and style that has lead me to be a successful businessman . I’ll share this with you , when I was young a owner of a large trucker wreckers north of the city would come and buy all the old trucks in town . His name was Sam, in his mid seventies , not overly dressed but clean ,neat and tidy . He always greeted you with a warm and gentle handshake , he then would ask how you are dong and about your family . Then he would ask how’s business .Sammy’s touch , was he made you like he was your best friend ,personal and friendly . Sam just asked what you wanted for the equipment never haggled just asked , If you price was too high he would thank you for your time and would be back next month .But ! before leaving there would be a pause he gave you time to evaluate and then you gave him a price he would accept .I became close to that old man he was polished well polished and there wasn’t enough Os in the word smooth to describe him . Big thing with Sam was how he treated people .When we went for lunch he would tip big , the waitress always remembered his name and his order was hot of the grill . I was learning, when shopping one time he strikes up a conversation with the check out girl . “you look tired” and then she starts her story ‘well I have been on my feet…… “ . Now this is small talk but when Sam puts the pop on the counter she quips “if you come tomorrow it on two for one ! .Sam is up to paying half thanks for small talk or else he would have never known that sale starts next day . When we would gas up his truck he would tip the kid a couple of bucks , who pumped the gas . To me this was odd , but this is Sam . Well one day we picked up a nail in the tire . Hissing away we scoot to the gas station .The garage is packed , very busy , I figure at least a half days wait until we get it fixed . The pump jockey sees us ,runs to the owner ,and some one yells bring it the first bay , we were gone in twenty minutes .I learned that lesson early . Sam may have put out to everyone he used , when Sam needed or wanted something it was always in reach .I used that force in my life many times .Once I bought a linner load of cattle over a hundred miles from home. At eleven at night I had the cattle but no way home . Now Mr Wotten has trucked cattle for me . If he said sixty for trucking locally I always shoot him a extra ten for being quick and gentle not to stress the cattle loading while trucked and unloading . At midnight I called him to come to get the linner load of cattle . He was sleeping . I could tell . He said he would be there in two hours he was ! And my cattle at home by 4 a m . he asked for 250 bucks I gave him 300 both parties more than satisfied . It works all the time ~ Copey
