That's a possibility. It sat all winter. The clutch was stuck, though it broke loose when I blocked the pedal down for a week. There's no noticeable blow-by, so I do think the problem is valves. The thing is it sounded just as bad when I drove it down into my place 2 years ago, and the guy I got it from had been using it for a wood truck so it hadn't been sitting much then. Before I pull the head, I think I should pull the tappet covers (cheaper gasket) and see if the valves are all going up and down, and then check the clearances. It's weird to me that there would be such a huge variation between cylinders and that the valves could be worn out and yet the rings are good (no blow-by) and the bearings are tight (good oil pressure). The one good thing about a Wittenberg conversion is it gives great access to both sides of the engine, including the valves. It sure is ugly, though, and I always wonder what Wittenberg did with all those hoods, flat fenders, side panels, and headlight buckets that he tore off of all those M37s back in the day.
