Engine serial help please

I have a 230 with the serial # A2993 I havent seen one like that before. Also,stamped into the top deck, right above the serial # but hidden under the head gasket are these letters: E E E D E D
Anyone have any ideas what these might mean? 6 letters, 6 cylinders, some correlation there?
