i just switched out the ammmeter on my old diesel boat and installed a volt meter. if you are running a alternator now, you should likely convert to a voltmeter. ammeters show the charging rate from your generator or alternator and a voltmeter shows the charge state of your batteries. not much to charge on an old power wagon so you are likely more concerned about battery voltage. what forced my hand was that i was upgrading from a 50 amp alternator to a 100 unit. running 100 amps through old 10 gauge wiring behind the dash is a fire waiting to happen. i ran a new keyed power source through the volt meter and ran a large gauge charging wire from the alt to the + terminal on the starter. shorter heavy wires are better for carrying power. my thoughts, yours may vary.
