professional rebuild from a hemmings guy or ebay purchase is in order IMO. automatic transmissions, carbs and tape decks are among many things i consider voodoo technologies. i can successfully take them apart but am never to put them back together again in working order.
the only way i would attempt surgery on a tape deck is if i had something that i wouldn't want the repair tech to see in the chute!
