The belts can get old and stretch and slip. Also may be a rubber wheel in there that has dry rotted as well. It all might just need cleaning. Those rubber wheels can get glazed and slip some too. Back in the Ghetto Blaster Days (is that politically correct to say these days?) we had sponge like Q tips and a bottle of cleaner and would clean the tape heads and rollers every once in a while.
