Evidently certain tolerances were followed during manufacture and mating of the Universal Drive Assembly. MY shop manual does go into detail on both the male and female mating sections having etched numbers so they can be assembled correctly.
With that said, the last sentence in that presentation says;
"There may be occasions when the numbers of the two sections do not match. However, this is not necessarily detrimental, if parts operate freely"
Based on this, there must be some reasonable play in the joint.
