Notice I didn't say I'm glad people are shooting lots of wolves. I just think it's good for both species that wolves were getting shot at last year. They were getting way too comfortable around people, especially up around Mullan the year before last and in my opinion it was just a matter of time before they'd attack a child or at least kill so many pets that people would start shooting them with or without permission. Personally, I'm waiting to see what they actually do once they're settled in. They clearly haven't killed off all the game like a lot of hunters said they would. On the other hand they have attacked quite a few dogs and decimated the coyote population. I also suspect that the big elk kill in the winter of '07-'08 wouldn't have been as bad if there had been wolves around back then to keep the elk moving, and get them down out of the mountains into the lowlands where there was less snow. Elk have a bad way of getting themselves stuck in mountain valleys when the snow gets deep and then they starve to death.

I've got no problem sharing the woods with large carnivores so long as I'm the one that gets to carry the .45.
