I think the biggest problem is stripping out the screw head slot by using too small a screwdriver.
Harbor Freight has a pack of 3/8" drive screw driver bits. The next to largest size is close to the size needed.
With it, I was able to use an impact wrench to take out the most stubborn screw without messing up the slot.
So, the key is to use the appropriate bit even if you later have to resort to other methods. That way, you will still have an intact screw slot to work with.
The average guy is not going to have a large enough screw driver bit on-hand in his tool box. Plan ahead, and you will save yourself a lot of work.
