The condenser charges itself up while the points are closed. Then, when the points open, instantly discharge all the ions they saved up. That big jolt goes to the coil, helping it make mega-volts from 6-12v. The condenser has to match the coil . It also does prevent the points from 'burning', which usually means tungsten transfer from one side to the other. Which side will tell you either too many or too few micro-farads in that condenser compared to the needs of the coil. Truly 'burned points' are blue or black, which is oil. Check your crank vent system, pressure is pushing oil into the dist.

I suspect the capacity of the condenser is a guesstimate, depending on revs, load (more fuel requires more voltage to get through and ionize a pathway), etc, so using a vehicle differently than manufacturers spec might mean a different condenser would meet the load range better? So near interchange between vehicles is likely. But ahdunno.
