It does seem strange to happen right after pulling the pan when you did no adjustments. Unless you have an aftermarket or modified VB that pumps in park you will get an erroneous reading. Low fluid level is not a good thing so check that out.
I would also do as suggested below and unhook the batteries for a couple hours. I know mine always shifts different after mine are unhooked.
I have a book for this trans and I will look at the troubleshooting portion later today and check back. I also have a FSM for my '01 and will check that also.
