It's a big accident and a big mess, but I can't imagine what the government could do that BP can't. Does the Navy have salvage divers that have been genetically engineered to work at 5000 feet underwater? Do you think nuking it will stop the leak? Do you think BP would drill the relief wells faster if we took all the executives and made them talk to congressional committees until the job was done?

It's no doubt mightily frustrating to the government that their power is not unlimited. All they can really do is punish people after the fact. That, and immediately issue permits for BP to build the sand berms it's offered to build to keep the oil out of the marshes.

Sometimes things happen that are just bad and can't be undone. The Salton Sea is the result of one such "oops". They had lots of gushers on land before they figured out how to keep new wells under control. Mexico had a big undersea blowout back in the 90s, and Saudi Arabia has had at least one bad one too. I've read where experienced oil men say that none of the stuff BP tried had much chance of working. BP is probably just doing it because they have to look like they're doing something.

As far as the "Can do" spirit goes, part of that means being willing to do difficult things that have never been done before, even though something might go wrong. If the primary goal of the US space program had been to ensure that no astronaut got hurt, we wouldn't have had a space program. Keeping the astronauts safe was number two. Number one was going to the moon. Now we need oil, especially American oil. The easy oil has all been gotten. If we have a "can do" spirit, we drill in tricky places, even though there are risks. If we can't accept risk, we can just try to buy all our oil from the Arabs, the Russians, and Venezuela.
