Dave, how would an old variac work? they are built heavy enough to carry several amps without getting real hot, the big drawback that I can see is the bulk of the variac with the volt meter(little bigger than a softball). I am not an electrican so some of the finer points are lost on my little pea brain. but I have two of them and use them often to slow down drill motors to do finer work on things. they will cut the voltage down to the point of letting my 3/4 drill run at about 5or6 rpm. just thinking, may be all wet, but it may work.
