It use to be that way all the time.

Days Gone By:
I could walk into the Schucks store in town and say I need a tune up kit for a 65 Chev 327 and it would be on the counter in seconds.

Now:
I walk in and make the same request. No I get asked. What year, What model car, Manual or auto, Air or not and etc. I simply tell them that It is in a 42 Dodge. That stops them totally and they do not know what to do.

The problem for them is two fold. There are so many more cars than there were in days gone by and they all use different parts even within the same manufacturer and they change parts so often. We use to have the Big 3 and a couple of others along with a couple of imports. Not now. So it is hard for them to remember everything. The same points, rotor and etc use to be used in many cars and trucks of the same brand. The other issue is that everything is on the computer and organized by brand, model, year, manual vs auto and etc. That is all the new guys know. The old guys use to use books and were hands on. I feel that also helped them learn and remember. Myself I learn hands on and learn much easier that way rather than from a computer. It is a proven fact that you remember much longer if you listen or read something then write it down. That mechanical action helps the brain remember. Why do you think taking notes helped in school? I can still remember a lot of phone numbers from my childhood and earlier years. Now I know very few as they are all listed in my cell phone and all I do is select there name and push a button. The world is a changing.
