i have worked in a repair shop for a few years now and we do a fair amount of split rims for local milk trucks and other trucks as well. as long as the groove is free of rust and fairly clean, splits are good rims. if they are mounted properly and clean, there is no reason for the ring to come off. ask your local tire guys for any pointers if you want to change these your self. good luck, dave
