To address the diesel vs. the 251 specifically: although the 251 is rated at 125 hp @ 3200, it puts out about 100 hp at 2500 (HP = torque * RPM/1000 *0.19), and really "getting" 125 hp will blow it in short order since that requires continuous full throttle operation at 3200. Torque numbers are the real comparison. What's the peak rating for the 251? About 220 ft-lb? The Mitsubishi is about 180 ft-lb naturally aspirated and I'd expect it to perform like a 230, with a better ability at the top end since it's rated at 3700 rather 3200 and can safely be run at 3200 all day. A turbo kit from Australia currently runs about $1600 because of the strong US$. Power-massaging a flathead would start with a rebuild and then some speed parts, I'd expect total cost to be similar. But again, the Mitsu might not fit lengthwise.
