Yes, the naturally aspirated SD33 is only about 80 hp @ 4000 rpm and 141 ft-lb @22-2400, similar to the B diesel (4 cyl, 3.0L) in my much lighter and smaller BJ40 landcruiser. I turbocharged it to about 115 hp and 190 ft-lb and with 4.88 gears and an overdrive it's pretty quick now. An SD33 is small enough it might fit into a Dodge without firewall or radiator moving. The only way it can be made to perform decently would be turbocharging (about 110 hp, 200 ft-lb) AND close ratio gearing, i.e. a 6 spd or a 4 spd with a separate overdrive which would give a decent split on 3rd overdrive.
The 6DR5 4.0L Mitsubishi diesel would perform similar or slightly better than the flathead with the same gearing. turbocharging it, especially with a 4spd/Ranger transmission/OD would be a great package. But I think it may be too long.
