Check for a worn accelerator pump in the carb. You didn't say what engine you have that has developed this bad habit. If you have a mechanical accelerator pump the procedure is as follows. If you have a vacuum operated accelerator pump (as on my 52 B3PW 230 flat head six) then this test won't work. In this case, you may have to have a helper or disassemble the carb to find out for sure as the accelerator pump doesn't start to work until the engine starts to turn over and create a vacuum. Anyway, the test for a mechanical accelerator pump is as follows:
1. Remove the air filter assembly.
2. Get in a positon to look directly down into the carb.
3. Work the throttle linkage from closed to fully open 2 to 3 times.
4. You should see a stream of gasoline squirt into the carb each time you work the throttle.
5. If not, you're accelerator pump is probably shot and needs a new gasket.
This assumes that there is gas in the fuel bowl of course.
Good luck.
