As for number one. Best I can figure, it was for back in the day when people paralled parked. If I recalled my history correct, the big road and interstate construction did not start untill the early 50s. Small roads and parallel parking was the norm. I don't recall seeing big parking lots in the old movies. I guess they expected you to lock the drivers door, and get out on the passenger side.
That's my 2 bits anyway. Not worth much now days.
