If there was steam and no noise I am guessing head gasket or the piston pin retaining clip came out many miles ago and the pin chewed a groove all the way into the water jacket thru the cylinder wall. the 23 inch engines have that issue when they have very high miles. the offset in the pin causes a slight side force on the clips.
