When I bought the 60 W-100 at the end of March, I had bout it as a parts truck. I got it back here and when I got home, I started looking it over more carefully and it seemed to have some promise. I tinkered with it right on the trailer, and got it to fire up, running on a frankenstein combination of several dead carburetors to make a somewhat functional carb, and a 1 gallon tank with an electric pump. I drove it off the trailer and parked it in front of my shop. I found an NOS carb for it on ebay and then for the next month, I was never able to get back to it. Today, after about 6 hours of spring chores, I snuck away and worked on the W-100. I put the carb on, and it would sort of run but only at high rev.
The Mechanical fuel pump was disconnected both from the carb, and the tank. I re-ran the line from the 1 gallon tank that had gone right to the carb, to the inlet of the fuel pump. Without the fuel line attached to the carb, I tried cranking it to see if the mechanical pump worked. I could feel it trying to puff, so I turned on the electric pump. It pumped fuel through the mech. pump and spewed out a mix of water and gas, and a bunch of white specks, looked like dry white paint. I ran a bunch through, it went from milky white to clear after a while. I put a new inline filter on it and connected it up to the carb. The truck fired up and would only run if I had the electric pump backing up the mechanical. After a while, I was able to shut off the electric and the mechanical worked fine! Once it had run awhile, it ran very smoothly. Time for a test drive! Ran it up and down the driveway, (a few hundred yards) went through all the gears, she really runs nice! On the last run, I was barrelling up the driiveway hit 4th, got near the end of the driveway and hit the brakes, which up to that point had been really good, and the pedal went to the floor. Fortunately, my driveway has a slight uphill rise at the end, so we coasted to a stop before running out onto the road!
I tried the winch, and it works fine too.
Needless to say, this is not a parts truck. I mostly bought it for the radio, headliner and winch. I am going to swipe the radio and headliner for my 57 W-100, but have decided not to put the winch on the 57, so it will stay on the 60.
At this point, I plan on fixing the brake line, and a few other small items and sell it. I may bring it to the Vermont Rally if anyone is interested in it, or could deliver it to the Northeast. Price is $2,000. If it sells, I will make a donation to the Forum.
Sure is fun to wake up these sleeping beauties!
Tim
