the output shafts are preloaded to a value of 15-30 inlbs (lubricated). the companion flange nut is torqued to 140-160 ft-lbs and the preload changed via shims. The idler shaft is installed in the case and it's nut is torqued to 140-160 ft-lbs and the gear should have no end float but still should rotate freely ( the army used a special tool for this but I beleive no one has one so just use the case method). These are the values from the manual.
