I used a hand woven string with knots tied in it for the measuring instrument. I then used a beat up old yardstick that had a lot of the "ticks" (each tick is about 3/32" wide)worn off to determine the length of measure the string (stretches a little) produced to come up with the measurements. Ain't technology great! :-)
