On the switch body, you will find a spring loaded button. Pushing this button will release the rod so it can be removed. To insert the rod, push the button and insert the rod all the way, then let go of the button. You may need to rotate the knob/shaft a tad to get it to go in all the way.

OR.......a Big Hammer may work also LOL
