A few years down the road of "synthetic oil" and I'm convinced it's about 80% advertising & marketing and 20% oil.

Mobil got the ball rolling with an enhanced petroleum based lubricant they were attempting to recreate the quality of sperm oil with, and everybody else in the oil blending industry jumped on the bandwagon.

Sperm oil has the unique property of running toward heat rather than away from the hotspot.

From what I've learned from some pretty good petroleum engineers the commercially available product ain't all that good when stacked up against Pennsylvania Crude product. Many compromizes have been made in the blending which yield more negatives than positives. A lot of blenders are employing animal fats obtained from rendering carcases and these aren't compatable with some synthetic components in machinery such as seals.

The oil industry has been playing these games for decades, and as of today nobody has figured out how to put a set of rings or valveguides in a can. STP sold millions of dollars worth of Hope in a Can, and very few engines ever ran better because of STP.

Present day oil blending has become so complex that an engine with 2 quarts of Mobil and 2 quarts of Autozone oil may well suffer excessive wear from the combination.

Regional Oils, well don't get too excited about Alaska crude, it's only useful for road asphalt and Marine grade Diesel along with plastics. There is a refinery at the end of the pipeline and it is more cost effective to bring in Diesel fuel on barges than it is to refine it from Ak crude.

Drill baby drill, just do it in Bakken where the oil is worth pumping!
