Sometimes the most expensive things are free!
Last summer the owner of the house I was working on had a hot tub he wasnt using. "All it needs is a pump" he says. Take it away and its yours. (ran when parked went through my mind) So I bit. We loaded it into my truck, its a small one, and I brought it home. My Wife was delighted, she just loves hot tubs. Personally I could care less about them. So, we cleaned it all up and I ordered a new pump and motor to the tune of about $175 if I remember. Installed the new pump, filled it up with water, plugged it in and waited it to heat up. I was told that it would take 24 hours to heat. Next day, still cold. :(
I drained it out, and pulled the electrical box and heater. I took it to a local pool and spa company. The guy there took one look at it and said "I know that tub, I rebuilt this box and will never work on it again" It is an old and obsolete tub, company is long since gone, parts unavailable. So I asked him if he wouldnt work on it would he tell me what to do? He warmed up a bit to that, and suggested replacing the heater, a relay and some other gismo in there. I bought the parts, about another buck and a half, and put them all in. reinstalled everything, and cleaned all connections, put dielectric grease on all of the connections, filled it up and turned it on. Next day, still cold. GRRRRR, I am about ready to roll the foolish thing into a dumpster, but my Wife says "dont you dare!" So, I guess I will drain it yet again, and try to find out why the heater isnt turning on. The spa guy told me that the heater only runs on the low speed setting (if I remember right). Should the heater feel warm from the outside when the water is flowing through it? The heater is a stainless tube about a foot long with sensors clamped onto the outside surface.
Anyway, any advice would be appreciated! (except the dumpster option, I dont need any more encouragement to do that!
Thanks in advance,
Tim
