I think it was 1969, anyway my folks went on a trip for a sail around the virgin islands and took some pics. When we saw the slides we flipped as we saw waves. Come Xmas, my brother Tom and two friends and myself drove to Miami from Houston, flew to Puerto Rico took a ferry to St. Thomas and another to Tortola. We got a cab over to the north shore of Tortola and pitchedd a tent on the beach at Little Apple Bay. The surf was only a couple of feet the first two days(this was before being able to forcast the surf as we can today). Anyrate on the third day at about 5 a.m. a swell hit and the tide came up about 4ft. with the swell which slamed the ocean into our tent drenching us our sleeping bags and gear. We looked out an couldn't believe it, and tried to paddle straight out but couldn't get out, didn't realize how big it was. We got back on the beach and looked up the beach where there was a channel. All we had to do was jump in and get thru the shorebreak and paddle out in the channel looking at perfect spitting barrels. One of the best sessions I've ever had and I been surfing for 47 years. What was really a mind blower was the clarity of the water, you could see the bottome as you flew by on top, very trippy. After the swell died we walked up the beach and stumbled upon Cane Garden bay. Surf was gone but we knew this was a perfect set up. Heard lots of tales about Cane Garden but yet to surf her. Little Apple Bay was incredible though. I'll try to load up some pics and post them. May take awhile as I have to have my son walk me thru it again.
