Windshield weatherstrip

Hi, I'm installing a new outer weatherstrip on the windshield frame (the one piece, continuous band strip), and am finding it is a squirt too long. Is this a common thing, is it meant to be cut, or have I stretched it a little too much putting it in ? Thanks for your reply.
