The problem isn't so much the knob and tube scheme itself, but the fact that it is attached to fuses rather than breakers, and the way it tempts people to do dangerous things to it. But I've seen worse things done with "modern" wiring. One guy I know had his kitchen stove outlet burn out, and when he took it apart, there was a piece of #12 romex connecting it to the 50 amp breaker panel. In my building, I found a dryer outlet connected to the upstream side of the main breaker in the panel. There wasn't room for another breaker in the box, so I guess the guy just figured he'd rely on the fuse on the primary side of the distribution transformer out in the street. My first house had all the outlets in the entire three bedrooms upstairs wired by means of lamp cords and flush-mount outlets nailed to the baseboards, run through holes drilled next to the door frames, and plugged into the one upstairs outlet at the top of the stairs. For all the mickey-mouse wiring people do, it's really amazing how few fires are actually caused by it.
