I hadn't noticed about the electricity, but you're right. They didn't trust the insulation back then so they ran three separate wires for the service drop rather than a twisted cable like today. I've never even seen a house wired that way, though I've often seen three unused old insulators screwed to the side of a house.

That was probably his aunt and uncle's neighborhood in Milwaukie. They were the "city" relatives. I'm not sure if they even had electricity out at the farm yet. In that big picture, I see a telephone wire along the county road, but now power lines.

And yes, you're right, it's really all about the people. I found a good one in there of Don and Ben (his dad) in front of the State Forestry plane when they lived at Gold Beach on the coast. Then there were pictures of the plane flying. That would have been in the 1930s. It must have been a really big deal to both of them. I know that State Forestry plane, plus the model airplanes he and his friend flew in the farm fields around home, are what made Don sign up for the Army Air Corps when the war started. His dad worked for the State Forestry in Gold Beach during some of the Depression years. Somehow Ben always managed to find some work during the Depression. He logged when he could, raised turkeys, raised sheep, was a fire lookout, worked for the Forestry, or did whatever needed doing. To his dying day he was proud that all through the Depression he never had to take charity, never had to borrow money, and he always took care of his family. Nowadays, it's "When do I get my settlement?", "I earned my disability!", and "How soon can I retire?"
