You just had to remind me, huh Marty?

If you adjust so the heal and toe both have exactly the same clearance to the drum, the toe will always contact the drum first (until the shoes wear in). This error is directly proportional to the amount of your initial clearance. The more clearance, the smaller the contact pattern at the toe.

You don't want the toe to contact first. You want the shoe to make contact with equal distance at both toe and heal to the drum. I was going to say the whole shoe should contact at the same time, but that is wrong as the shoes should have a slightly smaller radius than the drum in order for the center to contact first and then they "flex" into total contact as force is applied.

If only the toe contacts, bad things can happen real quick. Unfortunately, you may find you have plenty of time to contemplate that whole scenario while you wait for the rescue crew to extract the roof of the cab from the top of your head with the help of their jaws-of-life.
