I believe that someone was filling you with a lot of BS. I have an early 51 PW. It has date stamps between Feb and April 51. It also has the early style wood in a 2nd series bed. It came with the After type trans in it when I got it. I assume that it may have been the original. I put a Before trans in it when I installed a winch as the PTO was attached to the Before trans (1946 if I am correct). Both trans bolt right in. There was no problems at all with the rod shifters on either trans and no mods were done. The truck now has a NP 420 trans that was built with an M37 case and gears from a 56 PW NP420. Again a direct bolt in with the following changes shift bracket for the transfer and parking brake, parking brake handle, center trans cover and passenger floor board.
