When you feel like working on it, if you don't have a clear section of hose, you could run a hose from the lift pump inlet to a gallon container of diesel under the hood. That will troubleshoot the lines at minimal cost. Also i'd imagine there should be some kind of check valve? (not sure on a 4bt) on the fuel return line to keep fuel in the injection pump. Anybody know for sure?
