4BT - Odometers rolled back at re-power?

I am planning to look at two Ford step vans with Cummins 4BTs next week. At least one has high mileage on the odometer (17x,xxx). Since this was a re-power truck, were the odometers rolled back when the engines were installed? Otherwise, is there a way to find out when/at what mileage the engines were installed (i.e. call Cummins with the serial number)?
