Springs newer than our PWs may be lubed two ways: plastic buttons used in the ends of the leafs, or a dimple forged into the leafs into which an oil pad if placed.

Also, the WWII ambulances had "wrapped springs". The leaf stack was wrapped with burlap, then sheet metal layers, like an armadillo. The whole assembly was saturated with oil. The whole point was to make the ambulances ride better.

No, I just can't see how oil makes steel lose it's temper.

Some think that lubed leafs might overextend, and might get bent, but shocks will prevent that. And if no shock, now much air time do you expect?
