electrical, because they are less likely to get caught around your steering column and break (had that happen once), don't require a big hole to feed the bulb through, and are just more simple to hook up. However, I don't like it that most electrical gauges are 180 degree sweep style, compared to 360 degree when using mechanical. They make them, but they are far more expensive. I pretty much always go for electrical.
