Tough I have no intimate knowledge of Toyotas, I do believe my Ford works that way.
I do know that the tranny has a 'shift lever senser' on it. There is a five wire plug next to where the shifter shaft enters. Plus, there are lots of computer controlled solenoid valves in newer trannies. I'm talking from about '90?
